Why is Industrial Relations important for students?

Most people will have to work at some time during their lifetime. Those born from 1980 to 2000 are referred to as the rights generation, or y-generation. This means that most "y-geners" are generally more interested in what their rights are in particular situations compared to other generations.

Having an understanding of basic industrial relations rights and obligations may prevent issues from occuring in the workplace and may encourage effective communication between the employer and employee.

YWAS coordinates annual visits to regional areas to provide information sessions on the rights and obligations of workers in Queensland

What can YWAS do for you?

YWAS coordinates annual visits to regional areas to provide information sessions on the rights and obligations of workers in Queensland. The main office for YWAS is based in Brisbane CBD. The information sessions usually take one (1) hour and cover areas such as probationary period, classifications of employment, grievance procedures, discrimination, sexual harassment, employment rights and obligations, workplace bullying and dismissal.

YWAS is set up to provide young people, (under 25 years), with free and confidential information, advice and advocacy on all employment issues including employment conditions and entitlements, work contracts, discrimination, unfair dismissal, workplace bullying, apprenticeships and traineeships and sexual harassment.  We have skilled Industrial Officers who are able to provide advice and professional representation. Teachers who are asked by students about their working conditions may wish to contact the service with the student present to ask specific questions - freecall 1800 232 000.

As part of our ongoing community education program YWAS offers free information sessions to high school students on work related topics. YWAS is aware of the high proportion of school aged students who have part time jobs and are able speak on our experience with young people on developing an understanding of their rights and responsibilities as well as resolving conflicts that can arise at work.  We are also able to discuss with students the issue of balancing their work and study commitments.

We are able to speak on any of the topics mentioned above and are able to tailor our presentations to the particular requirements of your school.  We can present to groups ranging from 25 to 100 students from years 10 to 12.  The talks usually take 60 to 90 minutes – depending on required content, student discussions and individual school timetables.

Information sessions are usually presented through the use of Microsoft PowerPoint and we request that schools have a computer, data projector and screen available (although other arrangements can be made).

Information sessions to students are free. You can request a school talk via our online form or, download a copy of a 'request for school talk' and fax to (07) 3229 2153. Please note that 'request for school talk' is not a confirmation or promise that YWAS will be available to present the talk.
