About volunteering Although volunteering has always been incorporated into the activities of the Queensland Working Women's Service Inc (QWWS) and the Young Workers Advisory Service (YWAS), we have developed a comprehensive induction program. This program provides participants with knowledge about QWWS/YWAS in-house practices, information and training about core issues affecting the rights of women and young people in the workplace. Participants need to be available for an intial 10 full days for induction and a commitment to a further 10 full days volunteering. Participation is in the program is usually best schedlued one day per week. Participants are requred to sucessfully complete the induction workbook prior to commencing the next period of the voluteering program. Participants may also be be requested to undertake a project related to either of the services. Volunteers will be supervised during their placement and can expect to be provided with information on industrial relations and discrimination. Where time and resources permit, volunteers may also observe conferences at the Industrial Relations Commission (Queensland and Australian) and the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland and Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. Who should apply? Persons aware of the social-justice issues facing young people and women in employment. Participants in the general volunteer induction program do not need to have work experience in industrial relations or law. Successful applicants will need to have a demonstrated background relevant to the services (ie law, industrial relations, human resource management, management, business, social work etc). The special discrimination project requires experienced legal practitioners, advocates or advisers to commit to an ongoing volunteer program. The program will involve volunteers to answer individual client employment queries, manage client casework and be available to represent clients at the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland.
